Reviving a Disco Classic: "Lost in Your Love" by John Paul Young
When people think of disco hits from the late 1970s, names like Donna Summer, Cerrone, and Gloria Gaynor typically come to mind. But one lesser-known gem has been quietly making waves in the hearts of modern audiences, especially at my Disco AF events at Bar Nancy in Miami. That song is "Lost in Your Love" by Australian pop star John Paul Young.
Released in 1978, this track never made the same kind of noise as Young's huge hit "Love is in the Air." The latter became an anthem of the disco era, yet "Lost in Your Love", the third single from Young's fourth album Love is in the Air, stayed under the radar for many years. Interestingly, "Lost in Your Love" was never even released in Young's home country of Australia. Yet, somehow, it has become one of the most requested tracks at my Disco AF events, right up there with classic tunes like "Rome and Juliet" and "Supernature."
It's not entirely clear why this song flew under the radar when it was first released, but there's no denying its timeless charm. Written by the songwriting duo Harry Vanda and George Young, the same team behind "Love is in the Air," "Lost in Your Love" carries that same unmistakable magic, albeit in a different emotional vein.
While "Love is in the Air" provided the ultimate upbeat, hustle-worthy track for the dance floor, "Lost in Your Love" speaks directly to the heart. Its lyrics and melody make it a perfect anthem for anyone who has ever been lost in the feeling of love. Lines like "I'm lost in your love / Drowning in you" are a powerful declaration of vulnerability, one that still resonates with listeners today ( especially the ladies , which are the biggest requesters of this song ). The emotion in Young’s voice, the lyrical imagery, and the overall sound come together in a way that reaches beyond just the feet, touching the soul.
For a long time, "Lost in Your Love" remained a hidden treasure, I would play it in my sets as " filler " usually early evening' but around 10 years ago, something interesting happened. This once-overlooked track started gaining traction at events, particularly in the growing Miami disco scene. Perhaps it was the renewed interest in the ‘70s era, or maybe it’s just that people were finally discovering what those of us who’ve been loyal fans knew all along—this song has staying power.
As someone who hosts Disco AF events regularly, I’ve had the pleasure of witnessing the reaction from the crowd when this track is played. It’s not just the usual “hey, I remember this song” type of moment. No, it’s a full-on celebration, with people belting out the lyrics and dancing with genuine passion. The crowd goes wild for it.
In my opinion, "Love is in the Air" offers a more dynamic experience for dancers, providing the perfect soundtrack for energetic hustle routines. But when it comes to lyrics, "Lost in Your Love" hits deeper. It taps into a raw emotional current that connects with listeners on a more personal level. The song’s has the ability to capture the vulnerability of love, while still keeping that disco beat intact.
While there are countless disco songs that have faded into obscurity over the years, the resurgence of "Lost in Your Love" gives me hope that more hidden classics can make their way back to the spotlight. With so many amazing songs from that era that are often overlooked, it feels gratifying to watch this one get the recognition it deserves.
If you consider yourself a true disco fan and haven't heard "Lost in Your Love" yet, I highly recommend giving it a listen. Whether you're reliving the glory days of the ‘70s or experiencing this track for the first time, it’s a song that will pull you in, make you feel, and remind you of the beauty of classic disco.
At the end of the day, disco isn’t just about dancing—it’s about feeling. And "Lost in Your Love" is proof that a song can have both the rhythm to move your feet and the lyrics to move your heart.
Let’s keep this song alive.
